My son is only 19 months old, and it’s hard to be sure how much of what we say he truly understands. If we told him “this time when you lie down to sleep, you’re going to stay there all night,” he might not get what we mean.
But when we repeat the precise series of steps that we only perform before his bed time (versus naps), and then put him down, he doesn’t expect to get out of bed again until morning.
This only works with consistent repetition.
I wonder what other habits I have that are communicating things to others that I’m not consciously aware of.
