Why is it so impolite to talk about politics, religion, and money at dinner?

Our thoughts about these things are so meaningful to each of us, or we feel so strongly that we hold the most reasonable view, that we want to win everyone over to our view. And having an audience makes winning feel so much more important. But if we’re going to get anywhere, listening is the main thing.
When everyone in the conversation is all-in on talking about controversial topics, it can be a lot of fun. But the odds of more than one other person being in that same mood is probably pretty low, especially if you haven’t seen everyone around in a while. So it’s polite to save it for later.
Save it for when winning doesn’t matter as much as playing.
